152 New Student Housing Units Open in Kufstein

After just one and a half years of construction, the new student residence in Kufstein was officially opened. This new accommodation not only provides a home for students from all over the world, but also gives a significant boost to Kufstein as a university town.
TIGEWOSI ceremoniously handed over the new student residence to the HOK I University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol for its future use. Modern living space for 152 students has been built on the site of the former Enrich Barracks near the campus, starting in the winter semester of 2026/27. The HOK I University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol will operate the new building as part of its International Student Residence.
Following welcoming remarks by TIGEWOSI Managing Director Edgar Gmeiner, Mathias Ritter, MSc, Head of the International Student Residence at HOK, and his deputy, Christine Runewitz, BA, accepted the symbolic key. Deputy Governor Philip Wohlgemuth, State Councillor MMag.a Dr.in Cornelia Hagele, Kufstein's Mayor Mag. Martin Krumschnabel and HOK Foundation Board Chairman Dr. Herbert Marschitz emphasized in their speeches the importance of the project for Kufstein as a residential, educational and university location.

“Affordable housing is a key issue for students. That’s why we’re supporting this project with more than eight million euros from Tyrol’s housing subsidy program. This will create 152 modern student accommodations right on campus – an investment in young people and in Kufstein as a university town,” said Deputy Governor Philip Wohlgemuth, responsible for housing.
During a joint tour of the building, TIGEWOSI construction manager Aleksandar Regojevic, Thomas Bodner, managing director of the general contractor BODNER, and Bernhard Eidherr, managing director of the University of Applied Sciences Construction and Operations GmbH, presented the common areas, different room categories, and the barrier-free studios.
“With this student residence, TIGEWOSI is creating attractive living space where it is most needed. 152 students will find a modern home here, close to the campus. At the same time, this project strengthens an infrastructure that is of long-term importance for the further development of the higher education institution or university and the Kufstein location,” emphasizes Edgar Gmeiner, CEO Managing Director of TIGEWOSI. “The handover of the keys therefore represents not only the completion of a construction project, but also the beginning of a new living space for students from Tyrol and around the world.”
The new student residence comprises seven above-ground floors and offers approximately 4,300 square meters of living space, comprising 115 single studios, 17 double studios, and three accessible studios. All studios feature a balcony or loggia. A spacious common area with a terrace provides a place for residents to meet and socialize. In addition, there are 49 underground parking spaces and a dedicated storage room for 152 bicycles. The building was constructed to passive house standards and includes features such as a controlled ventilation system, a photovoltaic system, and green roofs.
“With the completion of the student residence, the Kufstein future development area is taking concrete shape for the first time. The on-time completion of the work on this first construction site is an important milestone on the way to a new urban quarter. What begins today with student housing will develop into a diverse urban and living space in the coming years. The implementation of the next construction sites will now be pursued with full force. Construction work will begin in just a few weeks,” explains Mag. Ing. Thomas Bodner, Managing Partner of the BODNER Group.
With the new student residence, we are creating a modern environment that fosters exchange within an international community. It will also provide a place that makes it easier for students to settle in Kufstein.

The HOK Foundation board members Dr. Herbert Marschitz, DDr. Herwig van Staa and Franz Mayer also emphasize the importance of the new student residence: “The new student residence is a key building block for the further development of HOK | University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol. With additional accommodation options near the campus, we are strengthening Kufstein's attractiveness as a study location and creating good conditions for the further growth and internationalization of our university.”
