Master's program
Learning outcomes of the courses/module
The participants:
• can describe different, advanced data storage concepts (e.g. NoSQL databases, distributed databases, etc.)
• can compare and select data storage concepts in terms of their suitability for projects
• can describe the special requirements for data storage that arise from the use of very large volumes of data (big data)

Prerequisites for the course
Students have prior knowledge in the field of information technology amounting to 6 ECTS and are therefore familiar with the concept of the relational database and can read simple SQL queries.
Course content
The following topics are discussed in the course:
- Characteristics of high-performance data systems (scalability, maintainability, reliability)
- Established concepts of data storage (relational model)
- Historical concepts of data storage (hierarchical model, network model)
- Modern concepts of data storage (wide-column model, graph model, key-value model, document model, column-oriented model)
- Database systems matching the models covered
- Scaling of data systems (replication and partitioning)
- Writing and reading in data systems (index structures, write strategies)
