Learning outcomes of the courses/module

The participants:
• are provided with basic skills in logical thinking, argumentation, and decision-making, which help them to reflect on ethical, socio-political, and technological challenges in the fields of sports and culture.
• will be equipped with critical thinking skills to examine and challenge taken-for-granted assumptions, ethical dilemmas and power structures and ideologies embedded in policies and practices and how they have shaped conventional sport and cultural management research and practice.
• consider postcolonial theories in the context of the cultural sector and critically examine issues of representation and interpretive authority.
• will be able to assess how these reproduce societal consequences, such as systemic inequality, and apply analytical tools to assess current practices, how to challenge dominant ideologies and explore alternative and transformative, socially just management approaches that promote inclusion, ethical governance, and equity and engage in responsible decision-making that is grounded in ethical responsibility and reflexivity.
• will be able to integrate interdisciplinary insights from sport sociology, management, and critical theory, politics and policy.

Course content

- critical thinking as a transformative tool for analyzing and reshaping sport and cultural management practices.
- foundational theories from critical sociology, culture and sport management to analyze and explain how power, ideology, and inequality shape decision-making and stakeholder relationships in current managerial praxis
- ethical dilemmas and political dimensions of stakeholder relations to explore tensions between market-driven factors and social responsibility
- human rights as a critical framework for governance and inclusion to analyze how participation, accessibility, and equity can be undermined by institutional norms and global inequalities
- current practical examples from the fields of sports and culture that require a critical approach
