Learning outcomes of the courses/module

The participants:
• demonstrate knowledge of the structures of the arts and cultural sector and are able to differentiate professional non-profit management from profit-oriented management approaches and apply these distinctions within cultural institutions.
• will be able to explain the history of development, framework conditions, orientation towards the common good and their roles in societies and illustrate them using examples.
• are able to identify the current challenges and development trends in the cultural sector and understand the influence of cultural offerings on societies.
• critically analyze and reflect on ethical challenges within the field of cultural management.

Course content

The introduction to cultural management focuses on the cultural sector in its structures, contexts, framework conditions and modes of operation. This includes producing, mediating, exploiting and preserving institutions as well as their goals and purposes according to the three-sector model. The tasks specific to the cultural sector such as copyright regulations, professions and working conditions are presented as well as the role of interest groups and the influential interrelationship between cultural management and cultural policy. Finally, it introduces the field of digitalization in the cultural sector and ethical references for action such as human rights.
